The first real conversations about comedy I ever had in Cantonese and Mandarin were at SBS Radio during the Sydney Fringe Festival. It was to talk about my show “Battle Hymn of the Swan Luck Club”, and afterwards my jaw almost fell off from straining to communicate in languages I don’t think in when it comes to comedy.
Hosts Elsa Tsang and Li Li Zhou patiently and with great humour guided me through tricky vocabulary minefields, and I managed to only slip into English a few times. Once was to say ‘create your own work opportunities’, where I unintentionally sounded like a motivational speaker from the Mid-West, and for that I apologise.
